Ignorance and Prejudice....

Post by awip2062 »

Those of you who have visited here have met my good friend Camille, who is Philippina. This one:

Anyway, she was at Wal-Mart recently and she saw a WWII vet in a wheelchair drop something. Being Camille, she went up and said, "Here, let me help you," bent over and picked up the item.

When she stood up and went to hand the man what he had dropped, the man went off on her cursing her up and down, "You [insert bad words here] Japs! [insert more curse words]..."

She listened to his tirade and then told him in no uncertain terms about how she was Philippina and how her family had been fighting the Japanese along with him.

He was silent for a minute and then apologized.

Ignorance can be painful.

Sad.

How did she know it was a WW2 vet?

WW2 had the opposite effect on my dad. Yeah, he fought the Japanese in the Philippines and in Okinawa, and then was part of the ground force that went into Japan after the two big bombs. While there he played with Japanese children and enjoyed the people and the culture.
Aren't you the guy who hit me in the eye?

He was wearing his WWII Veteran hat with pins all over it, and he mentioned it in his tirade.

I know not all WWII Vets were this way. In fact, I understand that the admiral who was there when the treaty was signed became fast friends with his Japanese counterpart and they spent much time after the war visiting each other.

I just thought this fit as an example of the ignorance and prejudice connection.

At least he capitulated and did the right thing. Some wounds won't heal.

I'm sure if he wasn't wheelchair-bound, his reaction would have been different. :-D

Possibly he could have then been kicked in his prejudiced nuts.

Hopefully it really did serve as a wake-up call.

EXACTLY, but in all reality I would just walk away and leave him alone.

They say you can change peoples' behavior but not their habits (or is it the other way around?)....anyway...you Ged my drift.

The change has to come from the inside to be real.

You know a wise man once said something about us needing to sow a new mentality closer to the heart.

This whole Kramer thing is pissing me off. Why does he need to meet with Reverand Al? and now they are talking about a cash settlement. These guys would have been laughing their asses off had it been a black comedian. Hell, a black comedian can call us white people crackers and rednecks and we laugh at it like a bunch of dummies.
