I think I'm a "prospective hippo". And I blame buffets! And I love them too...

I finished Ghost Rider this weekend.. I am glad I read it, but it is not something I would read again.. I am glad Neil made it through his "journey" back to the living. I used to think of Neil as one of my heros but this book showed me a personal side of him, of which quite frankly I did not like.

I was watching the interviews on the R30 DVD, and a question to Geddy was, Do you have any heros? and Geddy replied, I have thousands of heros, to which the reporter asked have you met or would like to meet any of them. Geddy said something brilliant at this point, He said he meant one and he was drunk.. which I guess it kind of ruined it for him.

my point is, I think I will just sit back and enjoy Rush' s music for what it is, go to the concerts because I love their music, but for me that is where it ends. I used to think I would love to meet Rush, Geddy mostly. but after reading Neil's book, I don't think I would connect to him on a personal level, and I doubt he would like me. I think meeting Rush would be a dissapointment for me and I would rather leave my heros where they are, and me where I am at. so I can continue to love their music without any personal bias tarnishing that for me. I hope that makes sense and I don't mean any disrespect to anybody.

You make perfekt sense, Billyboy.

Reading his books has shown me his human side, and that is good. Although, I must agree with you that I don't think they and I would become friends. We are quite different. That's okay though.

It was Road Show that alienated me more from Neil than did Ghost Rider.
But I will continue to buy the CD's, DVD's, etc. It's the music where the fan meets the artist.

Yeah, totally cool, Soup. I didn't get that particular vibe, but I completely understand. I think that any of us, exposing our lives in such detail, with such honesty, would more than likely not translate as well as we'd like. Perhaps "Roadshow" would be a more refreshing insight into the man. He's not so wracked with grief and hopelessness in this one. In fact he's genuinely happy and inspiring, while still retaining that blunt honesty that makes it 100% Neil Peart.

Edit:

Haha! Elf! We posted at the same time and I went back to look at yours and, ironically, your experience was just the opposite from how I saw things Smile Ah, literature. So very multi-faceted, eh? Very Happy

Yep. And I'll say one thing in defense of Neil after reading Roadshow. Though I really disgreed with some of the opinions he expressed, he did make it known that you don't have to agree with him to be his friend. Specifically where he called his riding companion and his bus driver his "Republican National Guard"... what with their watching FOX news all the time and such. But he still liked them both, even though they weren't on the same political page.

Right!

His relationships with those around him are inspiring in that, even though they seem to be completely different in political views, age and life experience, they are fiercely friendly, vigilantly protective of one-another. (hey wait. That's almost exactly what you said ) It reminds me of how we'd all be if we lived close to each other and could actually build physical relationships.

And the religion thing probably presented a difference or two. Still, we all (here at By-tor) have different beliefs and philosophies on that and seem to "put up" with each other just fine

Oh, and for me, this is where some of the funny "gayish" stuff came from in our recent banter with each other on the board. The way Michael and Neil play at being a domestic couple really made me chuckle. And as always, "Not that there's anything wrong with that."
