Any "hams" in here?

Post by ElfDude »

I had an amateur radio license years ago, but allowed it to expire.

Saturday I went and took the Technician test again (after spending the first half of the day in a class preparing for it) and passed it. Kind of excited to be getting back into it. Anybody else in here a "ham"?

My best mate is a hammer. He's been one for about 40 years or so nonstop. To let you know just how oldschool he is, his ham I.D. is "AI8R." That's a very early number. He has made contact with every country in the world and thousands of places within all countries. You know, then the person you reach sends you a card from their country to place in a log.
I helped lay down and construct a gigantic towering antenna a few years ago. We put on all of the intricate little wires and things, then rose it up from the ground and bolted it to the house.
I've been threatening to get into it as well.
Do you know the Morse code or is that not required anymore?

Very cool stuff!

I learned Morse code in 1985 in order to get my Novice license. I must have stored it in short-term memory because within a few days the knowledge was gone. :) A few years later I took the test and upgraded to my Technician license.

One no longer needs to learn Morse code to get a license. The FCC finally decided that requiring it would be like requiring one to know how to ride a horse in order to get a driver's license. :)

I would need a General license to do the kind of stuff your friend is doing. Don't know if I'll go there or not.

I've done CBs but never ham stuff. Other than eating! lol

I think it is cool what people do with them, though. And in case of emergency, well, then they can come in really handy!
