In all honesty I haven't shopped around that much in the fantasy genre, so many fantasy writers churn out these almost cut and paste books that are boring as hell, just cookie cutter crap with elves dragons. Then there are some that are just plain confusing. Tried Andre Norton's Annals of the Witch World once, couldn't make heads or tales out of it. But, em, I'd say Tolkien, naturally, R.A. Salvatore, when he's not writing too much towards a teen audience. He seems to do that sometimes. And recently Terry Goodkind. Picked up Wizard's First Rule last summer, damn fine book! Oh and the Norton/Lackey book Elvenbane. Trying to ged me hands on the two sequels.
