To me the word brings to mind Mary Jo Kopechne. But let's not go there...

Today I got a letter from Bear and a package that contained a Certificate of Appreciation that says "For outstanding support of PVT Dorian I. Lucas, a Soldier in the United States Army. The Army is proud to recognize your contribution and personal sacrifices in preserving the freedom and security of our Nation." There was a letter with it stating he submitted my name for this because of my support and sacrifice as an Army Parent, some bumper stickers and two lapel pins.

I don't see myself as the one making the sacrifice, though. This is something Bear has wanted to do for quite a long time and I know this is where his heart is. I am happy for and proud of him for his choice. If, one day, he dies in battle, well...I still don't see that as my sacrifice but his own. The only sacrifices I made were ones any parent, parent of a soldier or civilian, would make for her child.

I also got a handwritten letter from him. He is doing well. He loves the shooting practice. The worst part of basic is not having music! lol He won't get a duty station when the others do because of going for Airborne Ranger. He is going to do Basic, Airborne, RIP, then get his duty station, the Ranger School if he passes RIP.
They has a platoon guide that Bear said was the most incompetent, immature kid in the whole platoon. By the time Bear wrote me the next day, the kid was out on his ear as platoon guide -- he'd allowed someone to forget his rifle when they went to the range! He says the new platoon guide is much more disciplined and competent.
He is enjoying getting letters but the Sgt. Major gets upset when others get packages of candy and the like, so Bear wants me to stick to just letters at this time.

Just a note to all................DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, SEND FOOD OR CANDY TO A SOLDIER IN BASIC TRAINING!!!!!!!!!!!

It makes them a target for ridicule and extra PT!!!!

GO BEAR GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

RIGHT ON, Hairy!! He's right, y'all.

Plus, Bear would have to worry about the others sponging in on his
munchies...there's plenty of time for that down the road. :-)

Congrats on the good news you guys got! That rocks.

Personally, I really enjoyed getting newspapers from home.

Didn't matter how old they were, either.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE, BEAR!

Siggs, I haven't sent him any whole papers, but the last letter I sent had pictures of friends and family and a newspaper clipping with two of his close friends talking about their win of a softball tourney.

Just talked to Bear on the phone. He is totally LOVING boot camp! His DI told him that as long as he does what he's told, he should be just fine. Now he knows I am not the only jerk in the world! lol

Seriously, I want you all to know that he is truly in his element there. Yeah, there are things about home that he misses, but this is what he needed to fill that part of him that only being away can satisfy. He is getting stronger by the day, and I can hear the confidence and assurance in his voice.

And just to let you all know he has his priorities straight, he called his momma first! Good soldier!

I am a proud father, and I can safely say that our country is in good hands with people like him serving to protect our freedoms.

Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers for Bear while he is in boot camp.
