Drummers: Xhats
So, whaddya guys 'n gals think about cross hats?
I just dug out my old set of Sabian B8s, threw them on to my old hihat stand and stuck them out to the right of my ride cymbal, just above the floor tom. ME LIKE
Ever since I started drummnig again and working on jazz...thanks to really hearing Max Roach (RIP)...I have become much more comfortable playing time with my hand out to the right. What a silly goose I was to take so long to figure that out. Besides that, with hihats at different pitches you can create some cool textures with two-handed 16th note grooves.

I can't afford a cable yet. I have a feeling, though, that once I get a cable I will be playing my Xhat almost exclusively. I really like playing with my shoulders facing forward. I feel like I have more control.
I was also thinking that would let me slide my piccalo snare closer to the toms, which could allow for some interesting textures since I could bounce quickly back and forth between both my snares--I think I read that Jim Keltner does this on his grooves.
Also, one thing I've done to vary the sound of the hats is to drop a cheap 10-inch splash on the bottom hat of the Xhat to give it a slightly higher sound and quicker decay. This allows me to play some more articulate hihat patterns...like playing doubles on the Xhat and a syncopated rhythm between the hihat and the snare. I'm no Terry Bozzio, of course, but it creates some variation in grooves.
