I was thinking that myself as I was listening.

How could I miss this?
Of course I have to mention the continuing inspiration of Mr Peart and of course, diverse others.
During my teenage years Clive Burr and Nicko McBrain ala 'Maiden became a major influence as did Barrimore Barlow of Jethro Tull, Lars Ulrich of (early Metallica) and Marillion's Ian Mosley.
I loved the whole grunge thang especially the rythmic skills of Soundgarden's Matt Camerron and Pearl Jam's amazing Dave Abbruzzese. I admire many more but I've gone strangely blank :-) .

Kael sure knows his drummers better than I do!

I'll just add Bill Bruford and Alan White to the list.

Oh, and a new favorite is Ged Lynch.
Aren't you the guy who hit me in the eye?

Kael is an encyclopedia on drummers and drumming and would be a welcome re-addition to our family here. I miss him.

Stewart Copeland

Post by Gman9 »

I was really surprised that no one mentioned Stewart Copeland. For those that don't know who he is, Stewart was the drummer of the Police. Excellent technical drummer and unique sound. He also does a lot of soundtrack work for movies these days.

Kael would mention Stewart. He did in a thread like this over on .net back in the day.

Oh, those were the days! LOL

And welcome, Gman9!

Every drummer from Tull was great especially Barrimore Barlow
Danney Carey just unbelievable
Rod Morgenstein-Neil's buddy
Allen White is very tight with YES
Steve Smith-another buddy of Neil's
Kenny Aronoff-didn't think much till I saw him live. Kicks ass
Carter Beauford-Do I need to tell you who he is?
Terry Bozzio-Saw him with Jeff Beck and Stevie Ray.A master of ostinatos
Chester Thompson-Much better than Phil.Saw him at a clinic.Wow!
Steve Gadd of course!
Last but not least the one and only........Dave Weckl - Simply amazing.Like jaw dropping amazing.Throw your drum sticks in the trash amazing. Throw yourself to the ground and pound your hands against the floor like a child and say, "Forget it, I'll never be 1/10 as good as he is!! ...... F@@K!!!! Bwaa! Ha! Ha!

GREAT drummers. . .

Post by Perplexia »

oh, yeah, I've seen some good ones on this thread. I'll second some of those names such as:

Virgil Donati

Seriously, the guy's mind-boggling. I love his inhuman capacity of odd-time polyrhythms and his love for solid rock.

Dave Weckl

One of the most tasteful players I've ever heard, by far. He's so smooth with exalted chops. He's just. . . just. . . a GREAT player.

Vinnie Colaiuta

This guy baffles me. Sometimes he's playing some simple accompaniment (very polished, of course) and other times he's just way out there with keeping track of strange time. He can be as smooth or as unpredictable as I can believe.

Manu Katche

To quote my good friend, "He just blesses every song he plays in." Amen. I love this guy's creativity and incredible flexibility between 3's 4's 5's, 6's, 7's, [enter random subdividing number here]. He inspires my mutterings of "...that was sweet."

Stewart Copeland is a very fun one as well.

I'd also like to add:

Nick D'Virgilio

Man, this guy is what I would call a developed progressive-drummer. He manages to keep quite busy with a ton of different old ideas put together in fun ways. He's got some chops.

Mark Zonder

I think he's got a very unique approach and a distinct drumming personality. Cool stuff.

Byron Landham

Holy schlong! I saw this guy in concert with Joey DeFrancesca. What can I say? Incredible! A GREAT of the NEW generation!

There are many others, of course, but these came to mind.

Here's some drummers I like:

Bonham

Sean Kinney (Alice in Chains)

Bill Ward (Black Sabbath)

Donald Tardy (Obituary)

Tim Alexander (Primus)

Gar Samuelson (former Megadeth drummer...now deceased)

Pete Sandoval (Morbid Angel)

Gene Hoglan (Dark Angel, Death, Testament, Strapping Young Lad)

Dave Lombardo (Slayer, Grip INC, Testament, Fantomas)

Vinnie Paul (Pantera, Damageplan)

Igor Cavalera (Sepultura)

Perry Strickland (Vio-Lence)

Andy Whale (former Bolt Thrower drummer)

Martina Axen (Drain STH)

Charlie Benante (Anthrax, SOD)

The guy from the Dave Matthews Band...I don't even like them, but that drummer kicks ass.
