I am not sure if this is done, but here is what I have been working on of late:
Mother
Struggling, straining
She forces herself to walk
Grimacing, gasping
I stand at the end of the hallway
Watching her fight
To walk as far as she can
"Six minutes; how far can you get?"
The doctor had asked
And off they went together
Oxygen tank hanging from her shoulder
Clipboard in the doctor's hands
Down to the end
Tag the hole in the floor
Then back again
Tag there, in front of the chair
Down to the end
Tag the hole in the floor
Then ba-
"Stop," she pleads
Rest?
I can't?.dizzy?.air?
I need?
No!
I must push myself?
I have to walk?
Do the most I can?
She wills herself on
Down to the end
Tag the hole in the floor
Then back again
Tag there, in front of the chair
When did it happen?
How did I become the one rooting for her to walk?
Cleaning her room?
Washing her hair?
Down to the end?
Tag the hole?
They say one day you will realize you have become your mother
I have not become my mother
I have become hers
